Pune: Senior Citizen Defrauded of Over Rs 1 Crore by Fake Law Enforcement in Pimpri Chinchwad

Chinchwad, 10th September 2024: A senior citizen in Pimpri Chinchwad was defrauded of over one crore rupees under the threat of arrest. The accused, working in collusion, contacted the senior citizen by phone and conducted video calls while wearing uniforms to make him believe he was speaking with law enforcement officers.

A 60-year-old man has complained to Chinchwad Police Station. The police have registered a case against five individuals. The charges include various sections under the BNS Act: 205 (wearing garb or carrying tokens used by public servants with fraudulent intent), 308(1) (extortion), 316(2) (criminal breach of trust), 318(4) (cheating and dishonestly inducing the delivery of property), 319(2) (cheating by personation), 336(3) (forgery), and relevant sections of the Information Technology Act of 2000.

According to police reports, the accused, acting together, called the complainant. The first accused pretended to be from the Customer Service of the State Bank of India (SBI). The complainant also spoke with fake police officers dressed in Mumbai Police uniforms. Additionally, a person named Navjot Simmi, claiming to be from the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI), intimidated the complainant to extract money.

The complainant was threatened with arrest over a supposed Rs 2.5 crore fraud. The accused gained the complainant’s trust by claiming they would verify and return the money by checking digital currency. Ultimately, the accused stole Rs 1.08 crore from the complainant. Police Sub Inspector Mulla from Chinchwad Police Station is investigating the case further.
