Pune: Sassoon Hospital Witnesses First Organ Donation Post-Covid, Three Lives Saved

Pune, 13th December 2022: The Sassoon hospital and BJMC (B J Medical College) Pune had its first organ and tissue donation on 10th December 2022 after the covid era. It was the 45th donation of this year under ZTCC (Zonal Transplant Coordination Centre) Pune.

 

A 24-year-old man met with an accident and was admitted with a severe head injury on 8th December at Sassoon Hospital, Pune. He was working as a labourer and was the only breadwinner of the family. His wife is a homemaker. They have two young children. Meanwhile, his parents are farm labourers. It was a courageous decision of the donor’s wife to consent to the donation of all organs and tissues after doctors declared her husband brain dead.

 

As per the ZTCC Pune allocation policy, his liver was allocated to Ruby Hall clinic Pune, one kidney to Mangeshkar hospital, and one to Apollo Nashik.

 

The patient of Ruby Hall Clinic was a 66-year-old male in need of liver transplantation. One kidney was transplanted in a 35-year female and the other in a 50-year-old male. All patients are doing well and are stable.

 

Sassoon Hospital had its first donor in November 2016

Total number of donors -12

five – heart

10 – liver,

18 – kidneys

22- corneas

A total of 58 organs and tissues have been donated.
