Pune: Sassoon Hospital Rat Bite Case, DMER Report Recommends Disciplinary Action

Pune, 12th April 2024: A patient admitted to the Intensive Care Unit (ICU) of Sassoon General Hospital was reportedly bitten by a rat, according to the patient’s relatives. Following the death of the patient, an inquiry committee was formed to investigate the incident. Sources state that the committee has submitted its report to the Directorate of Medical Education and Research (DMER), recommending action against the hospital administration.

The deceased patient, identified as Sagar Dilip Renuse, was 30 years old. He suffered a severe accident on March 15 at 10 pm and was admitted to Sassoon Hospital in critical condition late on March 16. Due to severe spinal injuries, he underwent surgery on March 15. On March 29, he was placed on a ventilator. On the morning of April 1, his relatives reported that the patient was bitten by a rat in the ICU. He passed away later that night.

Sagar Renuse’s post-mortem was carried out at Sassoon Hospital on April 2, revealing that he passed away due to a severe spinal injury. The inquiry committee investigated the post-mortem report and related matters, submitting their findings to Dr Dilip Mhaisekar, the Director of DMER. The report noted that the patient’s body showed evidence of rat bite marks, and sources indicate that the committee recommended disciplinary action against Sassoon’s administration.

Dr. Dilip Mhaisekar, Director of the Department of Medical Education (DMER), stated that an inquiry committee was established to investigate the rat bite incident involving a patient at Sassoon Hospital. The committee has completed its investigation and submitted its report to him. Dr Mhaisekar mentioned that they would take action based on the report soon.
