Pune, 5th September 2024: As the Maharashtra Legislative Assembly Elections approach, political activity has intensified. An internal rift within the Ajit Pawar-led Nationalist Congress Party (NCP) has come to the forefront. The name of Rupali Chakankar, Maharashtra State President of the NCP Women’s Wing, is currently being discussed for the Legislative Council Elections. This has sparked controversy, with NCP leader Rupali Patil Thombare posting on Facebook, “How many opportunities will be given to one woman?”

Rupali Patil Thombare took to Facebook to write, “It is believed that Deputy Chief Minister Ajit Pawar will adhere to the principle of one person, one post. How many positions will be given to a single woman? I’ve been reading the news since yesterday. When I verified the news, they said the party had not issued any official statement. I earnestly request the party to consider other competent and hardworking women within the NCP. Many active women in the party deserve recognition. Capable and dedicated women should be given equal opportunities. This is my request.”

While speaking to TV9 Marathi, Rupali Patil Thombare raised several questions. She noted that the names mentioned in the news have not been selected democratically. When she inquired with the party, they stated that the information did not come from official sources. She questioned how such news leaks occur. Thombare also wondered why this news is surfacing if she already holds the positions of State President of the Women’s NCP and Chairperson of the Maharashtra State Commission for Women. She pointed out that there are other women in the party as well and remarked that she has never seen similar news leaks from other parties within Mahayuti.

“Questions Not Worth Answering” – Chakankar

Reacting to the questions raised by Rupali Patil-Thombare, Rupali Chakankar said, “Our party spokesperson will address their questions. I don’t think their questions are worth answering. I understand the questions you’ve mentioned, but I am not aware of the details. The meeting of our women office bearers is ongoing, so I haven’t seen anything related to this. I will review their questions, gather the necessary information, and then respond.”
