Pune, 7th April 2023: The number of road accidents in Pune has been on the rise, leading the Regional Transport Office (RTO) to take strict action against reckless drivers. The RTO’s ‘Vayuveg’ teams have taken action against more than 20,000 motorists from April 2022 to March 2023, primarily targeting uninsured vehicles and helmetless bikers.

According to the RTO, its speed squads took action against 20,482 motorists during the aforementioned period. The Vayuveg had set a fine collection target of Rs 15 crore in the financial year 2022-23, which the teams have successfully achieved by recovering a fine of Rs 15.02 crore, marking a 100.15% performance. This is a significant increase from the previous year, where the penalty collection target was Rs 11 crore, and the actual collection was Rs 10.59 crore, representing a 41.90% increase in penalty recovery amount.

The majority of the RTO’s actions were targeted towards uninsured vehicles. They took action against 5,903 vehicles without insurance and 4,491 vehicles without a rear lamp. Additionally, action was taken against 3,693 people riding two-wheelers without helmets and 1,199 people using mobile phones while driving. Other violations such as breaking signals, not using seatbelts, overloading goods, and carrying passengers in cargo vehicles also resulted in penalties.

The RTO’s Vayuveg inspection teams have taken this action with the primary aim of disciplining reckless drivers and reducing the number of accidents. The RTO has expressed its commitment to continuing this action in the future. Sanjeev Bhor, Deputy Regional Transport Officer, emphasized the importance of adhering to traffic rules and regulations to ensure road safety.
