Pune: Rickshaws Frequently Surrounding Gadital Chowk Despite Having Only Two Rickshaw Stops
Pune, 17th October 2022: There are as many as seven unauthorised rickshaws parked at Gadital Chowk despite only two stops being provided. Therefore, all the roads passing through the square are narrow. Other drivers have to work hard to navigate through these narrow roads and hurdles.
Rickshaws carrying passengers from Solapur road stop directly on the road behind the bus stand on the right side of the road. While the first rickshaw is standing, the second one also comes and stands next to it. From there, all these rickshaws stand on the spot till they get another passenger.
Due to this, the other vehicles do not get enough space in the way. On the route from Pune to Saswad and Solapur, the rickshaw pullers have made stops at three places in front of Agarwal Sweethome on both roads. Buses and other vehicles often get stuck in their rush.
These rickshaws are waiting for customers on the direct road from here to Pune. They also stand across the signal crossing line here. Therefore, the vehicles going from Saswad to Solapur have to get stuck due to the rickshaws standing in the way despite getting the signal. Therefore, there is frequent traffic jam here. In this square, on the way from Saswad to Pune, rickshaws are waiting for passengers in two lines. Buses leaving from depots or stops frequently get stuck here.
The police are also ignoring this arbitrariness of the rickshaw drivers resulting in the number of rickshaws increasing day by day here. Many of them are seen speeding rickshaws in the square in a competition to get passengers. Due to this, accidents are frequently happening here. Passengers have expressed the need for the municipal administration and traffic police to fix stops and discipline the rickshaw pullers here.
Mahadev Desai Sub-Inspector, Traffic Police said, “Only two official rickshaw stands have been provided on Gadital road namely Solapur and Saswad road. However, there are many complaints of rickshaws standing on all sides of the square obstructing the traffic. Action is being taken against them frequently.”
