Pune, 9th August 2023: Frustrated by the lingering urban problems plaguing their city, Pune residents have taken a bold step towards seeking solutions. Under the banner of the Chalo PMC initiative, citizens gathered today in front of the Pune Municipal Corporation (PMC) to present a litany of concerns to the Municipal Commissioner in the hopes of finding resolutions.

The daily struggles of Punekars have escalated, from perpetual traffic gridlocks causing air and noise pollution to the dire shortage of parking facilities. Piles of unattended garbage have contributed to an unbearable stench, while untreated sewage continues to pollute the city’s rivers. The contentious removal of trees along riverbanks for purported “improvement projects” and the construction of embankments and roads have further fueled residents’ worries about safety.

Despite the PMC’s significant financial allocation of ten thousand crore rupees annually, these problems have persisted and even worsened over the past year and a half. The city’s administration, under the guidance of the Municipal Commissioner, has failed to provide tangible solutions or a clear roadmap for addressing these pressing issues.

In response to the lack of progress, Pune residents have rallied together on this significant day – August Kranti Day – to demand a town hall meeting with PMC officials. The objective is to secure commitments and a definitive timeline for resolving the myriad problems faced by the city’s inhabitants.

Rajesh Deshpande, a vocal participant in the Chalo PMC initiative, expressed his concerns, saying, “We have launched this revolutionary movement to usher in a new era of solutions for Pune. Our ultimate goal is a cleaner, more sustainable city with efficient infrastructure and improved quality of life. We won’t relent until we receive concrete answers from the authorities.”

The key demands voiced by the residents include a garbage-free Pune, pothole-free roads, a streamlined traffic system, a clean and pollution-free river, ample parking facilities across the city, and a modern and efficient public transport system. The Chalo PMC initiative aims to provide a unified platform for the dissemination of information regarding progress made on these critical matters.

As the rally gained momentum, participants voiced their optimism that their collective efforts would compel the PMC to take immediate action. “We are united in our pursuit of a better Pune. Our city has the potential for greatness, and we believe that with the right commitment and strategy, these issues can indeed be resolved,” stated Neha Sharma, a young professional who joined the rally.

Pune’s Chalo PMC initiative marks a significant chapter in the city’s history, as its residents come together to demand accountability and solutions from their local authorities. The momentum generated by this movement underscores the shared aspiration of Pune’s inhabitants for a cleaner, more sustainable, and livable urban environment.

Senior journalist and civic activist Vineeta Deshmukh tweeted, “Educated Puneites hit the roads to protest against complete degradation of #Pune under @PMCPune ‘s Civic Chief Vikram Kumar &the 164 ex-corporators who eat our money. Potholes, garbage, encroachments. Pune is a sight for sore eyes. More power to citizens. #NOTA is d next weapon”
