Pune, 2nd December 2022: A 12-year-old rape survivor went missing before she was due to appear in court regarding a case against her stepfather, who abused her for over a year. Allegedly, Maher Sanstha and Tara Mobile Creches, the social organisations responsible for her safety, failed to guard her and were not careful. The special court has instructed Amitabh Gupta, Police Commissioner, to begin an enquiry and punish those responsible.

Due to a lack of verifiable evidence, the accused was acquitted. The inability on the part of the police to bring the victim to court prevented them from doing their job and cost them the chance to catch the offender. Police witnesses testified that the victim and her mother were untraceable when the court requested them as witnesses.

The court recently mandated that the police commissioner launch an investigation to ascertain who made the grave mistake of enabling the victim to vanish after taking this into serious consideration while rendering its decision. The court further ordered the chief cop to pursue the required legal action against the guilty parties and report back to the court within eight months.
