Pune, 27th July 2024: Pune Railway Station, a landmark in the city’s history and an essential part of its transport network, celebrated its 99th anniversary today, marking its entrance into its 100th year of operation.

Originally constructed in 1856, Pune’s first railway station was developed to accommodate the increasing train traffic of the era. However, the need for a more modern facility led to the creation of a new station. In 1915, the design for the current building, characterized by the Indo-Saracenic architectural style, was drafted by P. Wilson. The old station was subsequently demolished to make way for the new structure, which was officially inaugurated on July 27, 1925, by Sir Leslie Wilson, the then Governor of Bombay.

Since its inauguration, Pune Railway Station has grown significantly. Today, it is a bustling hub with over 200 trains passing through daily, serving approximately 1.5 lakh passengers each day. This evolution highlights the station’s critical role in connecting Pune to various parts of the country and facilitating the daily commute for thousands of residents and visitors.

In light of this milestone, the Railway Ministry, led by Ashwini Vaishnaw, has announced a comprehensive plan to further develop Pune Railway Station along with three other stations in the city. This initiative aims to enhance the station’s infrastructure and services, ensuring it meets the future needs of Pune’s growing population while preserving its rich historical legacy.
