Pune Police Warn Dumper Drivers: Fatal Accidents Will Lead to Culpable Homicide Charges
Wagholi, 8th October 2024: In Pune, there are frequent reports of fatalities involving accidents with dumpers. To address this, the Pune Police have issued a warning that if a fatal accident involves a dumper, the driver will be charged with culpable homicide under Section 100 of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS).
Senior Police Inspector Pandit Rejitwad, in charge of the Lonikand Police Station, delivered this warning. The Lonikand Police Station oversees areas like Wagholi and the Pune-Ahmednagar Highway, where many dumper-related accidents have been reported. In just 12 days, two lives were lost in dumper accidents in Wagholi.
In response to this situation, a meeting was held at Lonikand Police Station with mine, crusher, and dumper owners and drivers. During the meeting, Senior PI Rejitwad emphasized the importance of following regional transport rules and warned drivers not to operate vehicles under the influence of alcohol, stating that violators would face strict consequences. He urged drivers to handle their vehicles responsibly, reminding them of the deep sorrow accidents bring to affected families.
Assistant Police Inspector Gajanan Jadhav also addressed the gathering, advising drivers not to bring dumpers onto the road during restricted hours and warning that continued violations could result in the closure of their businesses. He stressed the importance of adhering to transport regulations, stating that drivers, not owners, are often at fault for reckless behaviour.
Ramdas Dabhade and Yuvraj Dalvi of the Pune District Mining and Crusher Industries Association added that strict action should be taken against dumpers that violate rules or bans. The association has provided 100 barricades and five traffic wardens to the traffic department and is planning to install cameras at major intersections to enhance road safety, according to Dabhade.
