Pune, 18th July 2024: In a bid to relieve Pune’s citizens from traffic congestion and reduce travel time, an innovative scheme will be implemented from 1st August on 32 main roads, which serve as key traffic channels in the city.

The improvements will include square (Chowk) enhancement, parking management, traffic control devices, and traffic separation techniques. These upgrades will be made in agreement with Google. An application (app) will be developed through the coordination between the Traffic Branch of Pune Police and the Pune Municipal Corporation (PMC), aiming to reduce travel time and increase the carrying capacity of roads in Pune city.

Under the guidance of Police Commissioner Amitesh Kumar and Additional Police Commissioner (East Region) Manoj Patil, a project will classify Pune’s roads according to their use and take special measures with the help of other local authorities.

The main roads selected for this project are those with the highest traffic in the city. When traffic is slow or jammed on these roads, the pressure shifts to internal roads, causing congestion in residential areas. To improve traffic flow on these main roads, enhancements will include updated signal systems, parking management, speed breakers, road surfacing, removal of road encroachments, and traffic control devices, according to Additional CP Patil.

The project will also involve completing missing road links, repairing damaged sections, enforcing no-hawker zones, addressing pending court cases related to roads, and taking appropriate measures for obstructing trees and establishments. These tasks will be coordinated with the Pune Municipal Corporation and other authorities.

By prioritizing these main roads and increasing their carriage width, the project aims to boost traffic speed and road capacity. This will encourage motorists to use main roads, thereby reducing the pressure on internal residential, commercial, and collector streets. Maintaining an average speed on main roads will increase their capacity, while speeds lower or higher than average will decrease it.

The Pune Municipal Corporation and the Pune Traffic Police will jointly develop a mobile app to coordinate square and main road improvements. This app will allow citizens to register area-specific problems and view solutions, as well as make suggestions for traffic improvements.

Additionally, the Pune city traffic police has entered a special agreement with Google to gather information about the city’s parking system, traffic congestion, changes in traffic, bus stops, auto stands, and PMPML stops.

“The above measures will be widely used to reduce the number of accidents in the city. We are also classifying accident causes into human and engineering errors and coordinating with Save Life Foundation to analyze the time taken for the injured to receive treatment. This initiative aims to reduce the number of accidents,” Additional CP Patil said.
