Pune Police Crack Down on Drunk Driving in Two-Day Operation, 154 Persons Booked

Pune, 1st June 2024: The Pune City Police conducted a major crackdown on drunk driving over two days, targeting motorists driving under the influence of alcohol. The operation took place on May 30 from midnight to 3:00 AM and continued on May 31 from 11:00 PM to June 1, 2:00 AM.

Under the guidance of Police Commissioner Amitesh Kumar and Joint CP Pravin Pawar, the Pune City Traffic Branch and local police stations organized checkpoints at 24 locations across the jurisdiction of 22 police stations within the Pune City Police Commissionerate, according to DCP (Traffic) Rohidas Pawar.

For this extensive operation, each checkpoint was staffed with one police officer and four constables from each police station, along with one police officer and three constables from the traffic branch. Breathalyzers were utilized to conduct tests on suspected drunk drivers.

“During the campaign, a total of 2,573 vehicles were thoroughly checked. As a result, 154 motorists were charged with drunk driving. Notably, the highest number of operations were conducted at Faraskhana Police Station with 14 operations, followed by 10 operations at Mundhwa Police Station, and 9 operations each at Khadak and Koregaon Park Police Stations”, DCP Pawar informed.

In addition to drunk driving offences, 685 other violations were recorded, resulting in fines totaling Rs 6,24,650. Of this amount, Rs 1,49,800 was collected during the checking itself.

The Pune City Police Commissionerate has announced plans for sudden checking in the near future to continue their efforts in curbing drunk driving.
