Shivajinagar, 7th February 2024: Pune Police Commissioner Amitesh Kumar conducted a thorough assessment of the traffic conditions at the SPPU junction on Tuesday morning. The inspection was prompted by the disruption in vehicular movement following a Saturday accident. The SPPU junction, linking Ganeshkhind Road with Aundh, Baner, and Pashan, is perpetually congested, causing significant delays for commuters.

This crucial junction facilitates traffic flow between various locations in Aundh, Baner, Pashan, extending to the Hinjewadi IT Park, along Ganeshkhind Road and beyond. During peak morning and evening hours, a substantial number of vehicles traveling to and from the city navigate through this bustling intersection. The ongoing Metro rail works by the PMRDA have further exacerbated the existing traffic congestion.

Since assuming the role of Pune’s Police Commissioner on February 1, Amitesh Kumar has prioritized addressing traffic congestion citywide. In response to the challenges at the SPPU junction, he directed the PMRDA and traffic officials to implement measures to alleviate road congestion. Another review meeting on this matter is scheduled for Thursday.

Deputy Commissioner of Police (Traffic) Shashikant Borate outlined the collaborative efforts underway. Borate stated, “We will analyze the issues at the SPPU junction in coordination with the PMRDA and other stakeholders, including Pune Municipal Corporation (PMC).” He highlighted ongoing road development and Metro works on Ganeshkhind Road as contributors to reduced carriage width and ensuing traffic jams. The focus is on evaluating vehicular movement at the SPPU junction and devising strategies to mitigate traffic snarls.

Borate further explained, “We are examining alternative routes such as the Aundh-Khadki road (from Bremen Chowk) and the old Pune-Mumbai highway to divert traffic, preventing congestion at the SPPU junction. Motorists heading towards Bund Garden, RTO Chowk, or Yerawada are encouraged to use these routes instead of Ganeshkhind Road, effectively reducing traffic congestion at the SPPU junction.”

Traffic disruptions at the SPPU junction ripple through various roads like SB Road, JM Road, FC Road, as well as internal roads of Model Colony and Shivaji Road. The comprehensive approach aims to enhance traffic flow and alleviate congestion in critical areas of the city.
