Pune, 10th July 2023: Commissioner of Police Retesh Kumarr has issued strict instructions to all police stations and crime branch personnel, emphasizing the importance of ensuring that eateries, particularly those operating in open areas, do not play loud music beyond the prescribed deadlines.

Kumarr emphasized, “These commercial establishments must adhere to the designated deadlines. We will not tolerate any disturbances caused by excessive noise.”

He further highlighted that the state government issues licenses to these establishments with specific decibel-based sound restrictions for playing music, and it is imperative that they adhere to the deadlines specified in their licenses. While the majority of establishments have a deadline of 10 PM, some have a deadline of 10:30 PM.

The focus of this crackdown is primarily on eateries operating in open spaces, such as rooftop restaurants. However, the commissioner clarified that establishments operating within enclosed spaces can continue playing loud music at night while complying with the provisions of the Environment Act.

A senior police officer stated, “Open restaurants and certain rooftop eateries in commercial buildings are causing disturbances in areas like Kondhwa, Mundhwa, Yerawada, Chandannagar, Vadgaonsheri, Koregaon Park, and Baner. Local residents often face difficulties in sleeping properly, especially on weekends, due to the loud noise.”

He added, “Moreover, a few eateries or pubs continue playing loud music until 3:30 AM or 4:00 AM. These commercial establishments are popular among young people during the weekends.”

In response to these concerns, Kumarr ordered crime branch officials to visit areas with a high concentration of pubs and eateries to assess the decibel levels. Night patrol teams from local police stations have also been instructed to monitor restaurants and eateries playing music late into the night, and they have been asked to capture video evidence of such instances.

As of June this year, the Pune city police have registered 35 cases against eateries, pubs, and restaurants for violating sound deadlines. Police have seized music systems and other related items from these establishments as part of their enforcement efforts.
