Pune, 5th September 2023: The Pune Metropolitan Region Development Authority (PMRDA) has taken a progressive step towards curbing illegal constructions within their jurisdiction. They have decided to harness the power of Geographical Information System (GIS), Indian Remote Sensing Satellite (IRSS) technology, and drones to detect and prevent unauthorized structures from being erected.

PMRDA’s initiative involved the procurement of two dedicated drones and the establishment of a specialized team of engineers and employees. To pilot the system, they conducted an interim test. Initially, they acquired both old and new maps utilizing Google Maps’ satellite technology, pinpointing a hundred locations within their territory. Subsequently, physical inspections were carried out at these identified sites, revealing instances of illegal constructions being undertaken without proper authorization.

Following the successful pilot phase, PMRDA made the strategic decision to implement these systems across their entire operational area. This move is expected to significantly enhance their ability to monitor and deter unauthorized constructions by providing accurate and timely information about such activities.

The adoption of drone technology is increasingly prevalent in various aspects of development planning, including road construction, urban planning, and surveying, such as that of the Indrayani river. However, the comprehensive data on the prevalence and locations of illegal constructions, as well as the effectiveness of preventive measures, remains a crucial aspect of urban development.

The PMRDA is actively deploying technology to monitor potential encroachments on amenity and road spaces, with a particular focus on unauthorized constructions, using the GIS system. They recognize the potential for drones to enhance these efforts further.

Rahul Mahiwal, Commissioner of PMRDA, commented on this initiative, stating, “We are committed to exploring how technology can be leveraged more effectively to prevent unauthorized constructions and protect the integrity of our region.”

PMRDA’s innovative approach to using advanced technology in urban planning and construction regulation underscores their dedication to promoting responsible development practices while safeguarding the interests of the region’s residents.
