Pune, 3rd September 2024: The number of traffic fines issued to PMPML (Pune Mahanagar Parivahan Mahamandal Limited) bus drivers for offences such as running red lights, using mobile phones while driving, and lane violations increased by nearly 39% during the 2023-24 financial year, according to data provided by the transport authority.

In the 2022-23 financial year, 723 drivers received e-challans for traffic violations. However, this number surged to 1,002 in 2023-24, covering the period up until March. PMPML officials have stated that both the Pune traffic police and the transport body itself are taking measures to address these violations. Despite this, passengers believe the impact has been minimal.

Out of the 1,725 e-challans issued from 2022 to March 2024, 985 fines have been settled, while 740 remain unpaid.

“When an e-challan is issued, we locate the bus driver responsible and serve them with a show-cause notice,” explained Satish Gate, PMPML’s public relations officer. He added that drivers are regularly reminded to clear any pending fines. However, passengers feel that more stringent action is needed to deter reckless driving.

As these incidents continue to pile up, passengers are urging PMPML to take more decisive action to ensure the safety of all road users.
