Pune 12th Sept 2023: The Pune Municipal Corporation (PMC) has issued a tender to make 150 mobile immersion tanks available during the ganeshotsava festival for which the civic body will spend Rs 1.50 Crore. While the civic officials claim that the decision was taken after several ganesh mandals in the recent meeting of the city demanded mobile immersion tanks, the activists claim that the tanks serve no purpose and it is a waste of public money.

The civic body will introduce ten mobile immersion tanks in each ward and they will be placed in different areas to ensure that the citizens do not have to walk upto the river or PMC’s permanent immersion tanks to immerse their idols. Earlier, the chief of the Solid Waste Management Department of PMC had clarified that the mobile immersion tanks will not be available this year but within weeks of her transfer the civic body changed the decision and a tender was issued.

According to officials, the tanks will be available for the six different days during the festival when immersion is done. The mobile immersion tanks were introduced in 2020 as a safety measure as the effect of COVID pandemic was still afresh and the civic body wanted the citizens to avoid travelling up to the permanent immersion tanks.

The activists claim that the citizens prefer to go to ghats and rivers to immerse their idols and nobody will use the mobile immersion tanks since there are no restrictions on their movement like the restrictions imposed during the pandemic. Hence investing on mobile immersion tanks will only waste public money and it will not serve the purpose, claimed the activists. On the other hand, the civic officials claim that the decision aims to reduce water pollution.
