Pune, 28th April 2023: The income condition of the Urban Poor Scheme of Pune Municipal Corporation (PMC), which will be a boon for medical treatment to economically weak Pune residents, is going to be revised.

Earlier, citizens with annual incomes up to Rs one lakh were getting this benefit. But the municipal administration has decided to improve this, Commissioner Vikram Kumar has given instructions to submit a proposal so that those with annual income up to Rs 1.60 lakh can benefit from this scheme.

The Health Department of PMC is responsible for providing good health facilities to Pune residents. But surgeries, treatment, and examinations are not done in municipal hospitals. Therefore, economically weaker citizens have to go to private hospitals. As they cannot afford the expenses there, the Municipal Corporation decided to help them financially.

In 2010, the Municipal Corporation started Urban Poor Scheme. Under it, cards are drawn from eligible beneficiaries every year.

Proof of ration card and proof of income within Rs one lakh is required to avail of this scheme. On that basis, up to Rs two lakh is provided for cancer, heart disease, and kidney diseases. While for other treatments, 50 per cent of the bill is helped, for which also a limit of Rs one lakh has been imposed.

Since 2010, the income limit for this scheme has been Rs one lakh. But many citizens with more than this income could not benefit from the scheme even though they were financially weak. Therefore, for the last few years, there was a demand that the income limit should be at least Rs two lakh.

A proposal will have to be submitted before the Standing Committee, General Assembly. This decision will be implemented after approval there.

Vikram Kumar, Commissioner, Municipal Corporation informed, “For the benefit of the Urban Poor Scheme, the annual income requirement was Rs one lakh, now it will be increased to Rs 1.60 lakh. The administration has been ordered to take action for the same.”
