Kondhwa, 7th January 2024: The Pune Municipal Corporation (PMC) has initiated the process of privatizing one of Pune’s largest slaughterhouses situated in Kondhwa, as revealed through recently issued tenders.

Sarika Funde, the head of PMC’s veterinary department, stated that the slaughterhouse, compliant with all governmental regulations, is well-equipped. The decision to privatize aims to enhance operational efficiency and management.

Previous attempts to privatize the facility encountered opposition in 2012. Currently, the slaughterhouse, managed by 30 PMC staff members operating a single shift from 4 am to 11 am, processes approximately 90 animals daily. After privatization, there are plans to extend the operational shifts to two or three, transforming it into a modern meat packaging facility, according to PMC officials.

To address environmental concerns, the civic body established an effluent treatment plant at the site in 2019, approved by the Maharashtra Pollution Control Board (MPCB). Despite the facility’s modern infrastructure, limited manpower and modest revenue pose challenges to operating at full capacity.

Moreover, the administration charges Rs 280 per animal, covering a veterinary fee of Rs 200 and slaughtering charges of Rs 80. Notably, a comprehensive health check is conducted before the animal undergoes the slaughtering process.
