Pune: PMC Secures Third Place in National Water Awards for Efficient Water Supply and Management

Pune, 17th October 2024: The Pune Municipal Corporation (PMC) provides water to lakhs of citizens daily, a service that has garnered the attention of the Central Government. In recognition of its water supply efforts and other related measures, the Union Ministry of Jal Shakti has awarded PMC third place in the urban category. The award will be presented on 22nd October in New Delhi as part of the fifth National Water Awards announced by the Central Government.

Additional Commissioner Prithviraj B.P. stated that PMC will receive the award for its various initiatives in water supply, sewage management, and water conservation. Currently, 76% of households in Pune are supplied with tap water, with a minimum of four hours of daily supply, averaging 157 litres per capita per day. The water quality is 100%, and water meters have been installed on 43% of taps across the city. The PMC reported an 85% grievance redressal rate and a 60% water tax recovery rate in its proposal.

Pune City has also achieved 100% toilet coverage in residential areas, with a total of 6,19,822 toilets and 194 public urinals installed across the city. The sewerage network covers 98% of the city, with 75% of daily wastewater being treated. Furthermore, 60% of the treated water is reused for purposes such as irrigation, construction, and parks.

This proposal was submitted by the then PMC Commissioner Vikram Kumar and Nandkishore Jagtap, Head of the Water Supply Department.

Nandkishore Jagtap, Chief Engineer of the Water Supply Department, commented, “PMC is always striving to provide high-quality water to the people of Pune. We are implementing a water supply scheme that ensures full pressure and smooth delivery while also reducing leakage. This award acknowledges our efforts in water management, conservation measures, and sewage treatment projects.”
