Pune, 1st April 2024: In an urgent public appeal, the Pune Municipal Corporation (PMC) urges all citizens of Pune City to prepare for the upcoming rainy season. Recognizing the potential hazards posed by falling trees and branches during heavy rain and storms, PMC emphasizes the importance of proactive measures to mitigate risks to public safety and traffic disruptions.

PMC advises citizens to promptly notify the Garden Department if they identify dead, diseased, or potentially hazardous trees on their property. In cases where trees pose imminent threats to life and property due to storms, fire, lightning, or heavy rain, citizens must seek permission from the designated tree officer at their respective ward office. This permission is essential for the complete removal, replanting, or pruning of trees.

Ashok Ghorpade, PMC’s Chief Garden Superintendent, said, “Compliance with the Maharashtra (Urban Areas) Protection and Preservation of Trees (Amendment) Act, 2015 is mandatory within PMC’s jurisdiction. This legislation underscores the necessity of obtaining prior permission from the Tree Authority before felling any trees. PMC operates in accordance with the directives issued by the Bombay High Court on September 20, 2013, as well as the regulations stipulated by the Government of Maharashtra.”

Furthermore, any development work necessitating the removal or alteration of trees requires explicit authorization from the Chairman of the Tree Authority Department or the designated Tree Officer within PMC. Violations of tree preservation laws, including unauthorized cutting or harming of trees, are subject to severe penalties, including fines and imprisonment.

Ghorpade added, “To address concerns regarding dangerous trees during the rainy season, citizens are urged to contact the relevant regional office of the Tree Authority Department via mobile number, as listed on the PMC website. Additionally, the Fire Department can be reached for assistance by dialling 101.”

PMC stresses the collective responsibility of citizens to safeguard the urban environment and ensure public safety during adverse weather conditions. By adhering to prescribed procedures and promptly reporting tree-related hazards, residents can contribute to a safer and more resilient Pune city.
