Pune, 3rd April 2023: The manual labor involved in lifting solid waste in Pune will soon be reduced as the city has now deployed containers equipped with special hydraulic systems. These systems will pick up garbage from the roadside, allowing the process to be carried out without human intervention. The new containers will replace traditional refuse collector vehicles, which have a weight of 14 metric tonnes after loading and require manual intervention.

The 80 new vehicles with hydraulic systems were inaugurated on Monday morning by Guardian Minister Chandrakant Patil, in the presence of Municipal Commissioner Vikram Kumar, MLA Siddharth Shirole, Additional Commissioner Kunal Khemnar, and Deputy Commissioner Solid Waste Management Asha Raut. The hydraulic system on these vehicles will load and compact dry waste before dumping it into the container, increasing the amount of waste that can be transported in the available cubic capacity.

Pune generates around 2,100 metric tons of solid waste within its municipal limits daily, which is collected and transported by the Pune Municipal Corporation (PMC) for disposal. Currently, PMC has around 518 vehicles to collect and transport solid waste within the city, with an additional 257 vehicles leased due to the lack of available vehicles. The leased vehicles, including 56 compactors, 108 small hourglasses, and 93 refuse collectors, have GPS and RFID devices installed for recording and monitoring vehicle operation through PMC’s Command and Control Center.

To lease the 257 vehicles for seven years, PMC has invited tenders zone-wise. The five tenders will cost approximately Rs. 325 crores. Furthermore, the newly deployed vehicles, including compactor, small bell jar, and refuse collector vehicles, have the latest BS-6 pollution rating, which will help reduce pollution in the city. Additionally, small garbage vehicles in the city are fueled by CNG, which further reduces pollution.
