Pune, 19th August 2024: The Pune Municipal Corporation (PMC) has announced a new policy imposing a ₹500 fine on waste pickers who do not adhere to designated waste segregation points. This move aims to address the increasing problem of illegal waste dumping and ensure proper waste management.

Sandip Kadam, head of PMC’s Solid Waste Management Department, emphasized the importance of adhering to designated segregation points. “We have established specific feeder points for waste segregation, and it is crucial for waste pickers to use these designated areas. Failure to comply will result in fines,” Kadam stated.

The decision follows numerous complaints from residents about trash being dumped in unauthorized locations.

Both PMC conservancy staff and waste pickers from private agencies will be subject to this new penalty. The enforcement will be backed by the PMC’s ‘Public Health & Sanitation By-Laws 2017,’ which outlines the responsibilities of waste generators, corporations, agents, and operators.

The by-law mandates that waste generators must segregate their garbage at the source and provide separate receptacles for each category of waste. Additionally, it is required that segregated waste not be mixed before being collected by the corporation or authorized agencies.

“The by-laws are designed to ensure that waste is managed efficiently from the source to disposal,” Kadam explained. “We urge all waste pickers and residents to follow these guidelines to help maintain cleanliness and hygiene in our city.”
