Warje, 1st August 2024: In a recent development, the Pune Municipal Corporation (PMC) has imposed a fine of ₹1 lakh on a contractor for substandard road construction at Warje. The contractor, engaged in a water supply project, has been directed to demolish the incorrectly built road and reconstruct it to meet the required standards.

The issue arose after rainwater accumulated in a pit at Babasaheb Ambedkar Chowk in Warje. Instead of removing the water, the contractor proceeded to fill the pit with cement concrete directly from the mixer. The high water content in the cement compromised the quality of the work, leading to poor construction. This lapse was brought to light by Sakal, prompting public outrage and criticism of both the Pune Municipal Corporation (PMC) and the contractor on social media.

In response to the backlash, the PMC has mandated that the contractor demolish the defective road and reconstruct it according to proper procedures. The demolition of the road began today, and the reconstruction work is scheduled to resume on Thursday. Additionally, the contractor has been fined ₹1 lakh for tarnishing the reputation of the municipal corporation due to the shoddy work.

Nandkishore Jagtap, Head of Water Supply, commented on the situation, stating, “The L&T company is responsible for the water supply work. After the issue was discovered, we imposed a fine of ₹1 lakh on them. A notice will be issued alongside the fine, and we have instructed the company to redo the work on this road.”
