Pune, 18th July 2022: The Pune Municipal Corporation (PMC) has a lazy and indifferent approach toward supporting children in municipal schools. It has failed to provide financial aid through direct bank transfers (DBT) to more than 50,000 students this academic year (AY). This has prohibited students from purchasing uniforms, bags, and study materials.

96,000 children attend municipal schools, and they are all eligible for financial aid. Only 46,000 students have received funding under the DBT system.

The grant is distributed before the start of an AY and has a total value of Rs 20 crore. The PMC contains 46 senior high schools and 275 elementary schools.

After the pandemic, the majority of pupils rely on DBT-allocated civic financial aid to purchase necessary school supplies and reading material.

More than 50,000 students are attending classes this academic year with worn-out baggage and outdated clothes as a result of the aid delay.

A parent said, “I sell fruit and make between Rs 500 and Rs 1,000 per day. I can’t budget money for my three kids’ necessary school supplies.

Vilas Kanade, the Assistant Commissioner for PMC said, “We have special reserve money of Rs 36 crore for the DBT Scheme. We transferred Rs 16 crore of this in the initial phase. Parents have not been allowed to use the DBT programme in the last two years.”
