Pimpri, 25th April 2023: In the heart of the industrial twin-town of Pimpri-Chinchwad and its surrounding areas, a worrisome challenge has arisen in the pursuit of justice. Despite the formation of a separate police commissionerate, which included carving out several police stations from the Pune police commissionerate, a manpower crunch has impacted the ability of police to investigate crimes.

A staggering 2,417 cases remain unsolved, prompting Commissioner Vinay Kumar Choubey to convene a monthly review meeting to address the issue.

The Pimpri-Chinchwad police commissionerate was established with the goal of addressing the specific needs of this unique and bustling region. However, due to a lack of resources, many crimes have yet to be solved, despite the best efforts of the police. Urban areas like Pimpri, Wakad, Hinjawadi, Chakan and Dehu Road face the greatest challenges due to their high population density. With over 1,000 crime cases reported to these seven police stations each year, the demand for law enforcement remains high.

The state government, when the commissionerate was formed, ordered the attachment of manpower according to the sanctioned strength of the existing police stations. This meant that all additional manpower deputed to the area was withdrawn, resulting in a decrease in the number of policemen available to tackle the rising crime rate. The recent recruitment of 600 new posts has provided some relief, but these policemen are still in the process of gaining experience and are currently posted at the police headquarters rather than at police stations.

Commissioner Choubey has ordered the police officers to expedite investigations in order to clear the backlog of pending cases.

Deputy Commissioner of Police (Crime) Swapna Gore has reassured the public that team efforts are being made to solve cases and clear the pendency of investigations. Crime branch officials are also being involved in the investigations in addition to the officers posted at the police stations.
