Pune, 1st December 2023: The Taxation and Tax Collection Department of the Pune Municipal Corporation (PMC) experienced a significant influx of applications on the final day, with 96,257 property owners applying for a 40 per cent discount on property tax. The applications received by the department will undergo scrutiny, and those eligible for the discount will receive the overpaid amount in four equal instalments. Additionally, property owners seeking exemption will be granted relief starting from the next financial year, commencing on April 1, 2024.

The decision to discontinue the annual 40 per cent discount on residential property tax in Pune from April 1, 2023, prompted a strong response from the Pune city’s residents. Subsequently, a proposal was sent to the Maharashtra state government to extend the discount from the current financial year, and it received approval from both the Cabinet and the Assembly. This initiative benefitted over 3.5 lakh owner who had received notices of increased payments and had paid additional property tax with arrears.

The scheme, which expired on November 30, witnessed a surge in applications on the final day, demonstrating the continued interest and reliance on the discount by residential property holders. Despite the expiration of the concession period, property owners can still apply for the discount. Deputy Commissioner of Taxation and Taxation Department, Ajit Deshmukh, stated that property holders submitting applications after the deadline would be considered for the concession from the next financial year, starting April 1, 2024.
