Pune: Online Birth and Death Registration System Fails; PMC Appeals for Cooperation

Pune, 11th October 2024: The central online system used to register births and deaths, as well as to issue certificates, is facing frequent technical problems. As a result, there is a delay in preparing these documents by the Pune Municipal Corporation (PMC). The Health Department of the PMC has corresponded with the relevant authorities and has appealed to citizens to cooperate until the system is functioning smoothly.

Before 2019, birth and death certificates were issued directly by the PMC. However, since 2019, births and deaths have been registered in the Civil Registration System (CRS) of the central government. This system was created to ensure uniform issuance of birth and death records across the country, and it is mandatory for all local bodies to use it.

A few months ago, changes were made to this system. Previously, citizens could obtain birth and death certificates from any ward office of the PMC regardless of where the event occurred in the city. However, since 24th June, the software has been updated, and now, certificates must be obtained from the ward office that has jurisdiction over the area where the birth or death was reported. Technical problems with this system, including server downtime and slow operation, are affecting the issuance of documents.

In this regard, the PMC has communicated with the District Registrar, District Health Officer, State Deputy Director, Deputy Chief Registrar, and the central government’s CRS system. Due to these technical difficulties, there is a delay in distributing certificates. Therefore, Neena Borade, the Health Chief of the PMC, and Dr. Manisha Naik, Assistant Chief of Health, have appealed to citizens for their cooperation.
