Market Yard, 1st October 2024: The arrival of red onions has commenced in the Market Yard, and experts believe that prices will not increase significantly. The cost of old onions in the wholesale market has decreased by ₹6 compared to last week.

New onions are being sold for ₹20 to ₹35, depending on their quality. As a result, retail prices have also dropped. Onions that were selling for ₹70-₹80 per kg last week are now priced at ₹50-₹60 per kg. The onion crop in South Indian states has been damaged, leading to increased demand for onions from Maharashtra and Madhya Pradesh across the country, which initially pushed prices up.

On Sunday, September 22nd, about 70 trucks of onions entered the market. However, the following Sunday, September 29th, saw an increase in arrivals, with 100 trucks of onions reported, including 10 trucks of new and fresh onions. New onions have been arriving in the market for the past three to four days, with two to three trucks coming from Hubballi, Karnataka. The remaining new onions have been sourced from Purandar taluka in Pune.

Experts suggest that if the weather remains dry, more quality onions will enter the market in the next four to five days. With the anticipated drop in prices due to the influx of new onions, stored onions have started being brought to the market. Consequently, the supply of old onions has increased, leading to a decline in prices. Last week, old onions fetched ₹44 to ₹48 per kg in the wholesale market, which has now reduced to ₹35 to ₹42.
