Pune, 25th October 2024: Despite all four dams supplying water to the city being at full capacity, residents of Pune are struggling with water shortages. The issue has been exacerbated by the municipal administration’s decision to shut down the water supply across the city for a full day to conduct electrical work at various water treatment plants during the Diwali festival.

Last week, the municipality announced that the entire city would experience a one-day water supply shutdown on Thursday. They warned citizens of low pressure and delayed water delivery the following day. However, many areas experienced significant disruptions even two days later, with residents reporting that water supply was not restored as promised.

Pune citizens expressed their frustration over the lack of water for two consecutive days. Many reached out to the water supply department for updates on when they could expect water to return, only to find that municipal employees were unresponsive, often failing to answer phone calls. The senior officials of the water supply department appeared to be unaware of the growing discontent among residents.

Compounding the problem, the municipal corporation has scheduled another water supply shutdown for Saturday, October 26, to carry out repairs on the water channel from Lashkar Water Supply Water Center to Ramtekdi. This shutdown will affect areas including Hadapsar, Mundhwa, Magarpatta City, and surrounding regions. Citizens have been informed that they should expect delays and low pressure in the water supply on Sunday, October 27.

The areas facing disruption include Ramtekdi, Syednagar, Haven Park, Shankar Math, Vaiduvadi, Mundhwa, Magarpatta, Akashvani, Sadesatranali, Keshavnagar, Hadapsar Gavthan, Satavadi, Ganagle Nagar, Sasane Nagar, Kalepadal, Shinde Vasti, Bhimnagar, Milindnagar, Bharat Forge, Mohammadwadi, Rajiv Gandhinagar, NIBM Road, Poklemala, and Handewadi Road Area.

Residents are increasingly frustrated with the municipal corporation’s frequent water supply interruptions, especially during festive seasons. They argue that the city administration seems to prioritize repairs over residents’ needs, resulting in ongoing hardships. Citizens allege that the municipality routinely shuts off the water supply every eight to ten days under the guise of electrical and water supply repairs, leaving them to suffer the consequences long after the disruptions occur.
