Pune, 25th May 2024: Following the Porsche car accident that claimed the lives of two IT professionals in Kalyani Nagar last Sunday, the state excise department has initiated a comprehensive crackdown on bars and pubs throughout Pune. The accident, involving a Porsche allegedly driven by a minor who was purportedly served alcohol at two pubs – Cosie and Blak Club, has evoked widespread outrage and prompted stringent enforcement of excise laws.

Since Tuesday, 66 licenses have been suspended including those of popular establishments like 2BHK, Ballr, Waters, Demora, The Miller’s, and Elrow and Unicorn.

The crackdown specifically targets violations such as serving liquor to minors, selling alcohol in unauthorized locations, and failing to maintain proper records. District Collector Dr. Suhas Diwase ordered the suspension of these licenses, emphasizing the imperative of strict adherence to regulations.

The accident, involving a minor driving a Porsche at speeds exceeding 160 km/h, has intensified scrutiny of Pune’s nightlife venues. The minor reportedly consumed alcohol at Cosie and Blak Club before the fatal crash, highlighting the pressing need for enhanced compliance and enforcement measures.

“We are taking decisive action against establishments found to be in violation of excise laws,” stated Dr. Diwase.

In response to the crackdown, members of the hotel and bar association staged protests, expressing frustration over the continuous actions taken by the excise department and the Pune Municipal Corporation (PMC). Despite the protests, the administration remains resolute in its determination to ensure compliance and avert such tragedies in the future.
