Pune: NDA Celebrates 75 Years with Adventurous Ocean Sailing Expedition

Pune, 9th December 2023: As part of the 75 Glorious years celebrations of the National Defence Academy (NDA), an Ocean Sailing expedition from Goa to Kochi and back was flagged off in the early hours of 6th December.

A crew of nine cadets and three officers are undertaking the challenging and adventurous task of sailing in Open Ocean covering over 334 nautical miles on each leg of the expedition. The crew will be undertaking this naval odyssey aboard Indian Naval Sailing Vessels Mhadei, Bulbul, and Neelkant.

The crew underwent the basic training on sailing at Kochi followed by advanced training on the same at Goa. The entire crew has been proficiently trained on important aspects such as setting up sails, navigation, first aid and other essential skills. The first leg of the expedition from Goa to Kochi has been flagged off and is expected to culminate on 10th December at Kochi. The second leg of the expedition will be flagged off from Kochi harbour on 12th December and will culminate at Goa on 16th December.

Ocean sailing is one of the most demanding sports which is considered to be challenging both mentally and physically. The academy aims to instill a spirit of adventure, enhance the risk taking abilities and foster the development of resilience, teamwork and a passion for continuous learning in the cadets.

On 16 January 2024, NDA completes 75 glorious years in the service to the nation. The sailing expedition is aimed to commemorate the grand occasion in the maritime domain.
