Pune, 20th July 2023: With the onset of rains in the catchment areas of all four dams in the Khadakwasla Dam chain project, the Pune Municipal Corporation (PMC) has chosen to remain cautious about reducing water supply. The decision to implement a water cut every Thursday will continue as scheduled, without canceling the measure. As a result, the planned restriction on water supply during the day has been postponed for now.

The Panshet, Varasgaon, Temghar, and Khadakwasla dams, which provide water to the city, have experienced a decline in water reserves. To address this issue, it was decided to enforce a water cut every Thursday starting May 18. The Indian Meteorological Department had earlier forecasted that the monsoon would likely arrive in June.

However, due to insufficient rainfall in the month of June, the decision to implement a daytime water cut from May 18 until the end of August was initiated. Nevertheless, further escalation of the water reduction was delayed. Considering the available water storage in the dam and the latest rain predictions from the Meteorological Department, the water supply department of the Municipal Corporation conducted a comprehensive review.

In recent days, rains have begun in the city, the surrounding areas, and the catchment regions of the dams, leading to an increase of two TMC in water storage within the last 48 hours. The upcoming forecast also indicates the likelihood of heavy rain in the coming days, which could further boost water storage levels. However, the Pune Municipal Corporation remains cautious and is maintaining the water cut practice every Thursday for the immediate future.

Although there has been an improvement in water storage, the Corporation will only consider canceling the water cut when significant and sustained growth in dam storage is observed. Until then, the situation will be continually reviewed.
