Pune Municipal Corporation Goes Green with E-Trucks for Waste Transportation
Pune, 31st May 2023: Pune Municipal Corporation (PMC) is making strides towards a more sustainable and eco-friendly waste management system. Following the implementation of e-cars for officials, PMC has now decided to introduce e-trucks for waste transportation. The Standing Committee has given its approval for the procurement of 10 e-trucks, with an allocated budget of Rs 1.72 crores.
With the aim of reducing air pollution in the city, PMC secured funds from the 15th Finance Commission of the Central Government. Utilizing these funds, a proposal was put forth to acquire e-trucks specifically designed for waste transportation. Currently, garbage is collected and transported to the processing facilities using traditional methods such as bell carts and large compactors.
The existing system incurs a cost of approximately Rs 6 per kilometer, with 600 to 700 kg of garbage collected per hour through the Ghantagardi process. By introducing e-trucks, PMC aims to reduce this cost while increasing the transportation capacity. The e-trucks are estimated to have a transportation cost of around 70 paisa per kilometer, capable of carrying up to one and a half tons of waste at a time.
Moreover, a fully charged battery enables the e-trucks to cover a distance of up to 200 kilometers, facilitating waste collection in all areas of the city, including those far from the current garbage ramps.
With a price tag of approximately 16.45 lakhs per truck, the total expenditure, including GST, amounts to 1.72 crores. PMC plans to establish charging infrastructure at the Municipal Vehicle Depot in Gultekdi, as well as in various regional offices, to support the operation of these e-trucks.
