Pune, 18th April 2023: The municipal corporation has announced that 50 open markets will be set up in the city to facilitate the sale of agricultural produce by farmers and also to curb the illegal sale of vegetables and other items on the streets by traders. The markets will operate for a limited time period, and the list of locations will be announced in the next two to three days. The municipal commissioner, Vikram Kumar, stated that these markets will be set up on properties owned by the municipal corporation.

According to Commissioner Kumar, this decision was made after a meeting with the farmers following their recent agitation at the Pune Municipal Corporation (PMC) on 17th April. Currently, farmers who come to the city to sell their produce often set up shop on busy roads, leading to traffic congestion and accidents. Therefore, providing a fixed location for them to sell their produce is a critical step towards addressing this issue.

Under the new plan, farmers will be allowed to sell their produce for one day, and the municipal corporation will designate specific locations for them to set up their stalls in all four directions of the city. They will be required to pay a daily rent for the space they occupy. However, any farmers found selling their produce on the roads after securing a spot will face strict legal action.

The municipal corporation plans to make municipal amenity spaces and municipally-owned spaces available for the farmers to sell their produce on certain days of the week, taking into account the surrounding population and the available space.

Additionally, Commissioner Vikram Kumar explained that the road traders in the respective areas would also be allowed to do business with a one-day license in these designated areas. The Anti-Encroachment Department will prepare the proposal in this regard in the next two days, and the plan will be implemented immediately.
