Pune, 10th June 2024: In a letter to Pune Municipal Commissioner Rajendra Bhosale, Pune Rajya Sabha MP Medha Kulkarni has called for swift action to compensate residents for recent rain damage and to prepare for the upcoming monsoon season.

MP Kulkarni highlighted the severe impact of recent heavy rains on Pune, which resulted in significant damage and distress across several communities. Despite being out of the city, Kulkarni addressed these issues with local authorities, expressing her sorrow for the suffering of residents, particularly the elderly, mothers, and children affected by water intrusion. She emphasized the need for compensation for damages, including household appliances like refrigerators and TVs.

In a related incident, Kunal Tilak, BJP spokesman and son of former mayor and MLA Mukta Tilak, experienced severe traffic congestion while trying to reach the airport from Sangamwadi for a late-night departure. Forced to run, walk, ride on two motorbikes, and finally take a rickshaw, Tilak’s ordeal underscored the urgent need for improved infrastructure and prompt action by authorities.

Kulkarni criticized the municipal corporation for negligence and malpractice, which she attributed to the city’s current dire situation. She pointed out the inadequacies in emergency response and support systems, highlighting a failure on the part of the corporation to protect and aid its citizens effectively.

In her letter, Kulkarni urged the PMC Commissioner to take immediate steps to address the damage caused by recent rains and to prepare for future monsoons. Her recommendations included:

– Taking action against unauthorized constructions.
– Organizing and cleaning rainwater drains.
– Increasing riverbed depth to prevent flooding.
– Clearing blocked drains.
– Enforcing rainwater harvesting.
– Maintaining the expected drain width as per the Primer report to prevent waterlogging and minimize citizens’ losses.

Kulkarni stressed the importance of these measures to prevent future occurrences and ensure the safety and well-being of Pune’s residents.
