Pune, 4th July , 2024: A grave public health concern has emerged in Mohammadwadi, Pune, as two overflowing drainages near Axis Bank ATM and Backstage Lounge Bar have been left unattended by the Pune Municipal Corporation (PMC) for over two months. The negligence has led to a severe health hazard for residents and commuters in the area.

Jaymala Dhankikar, a resident of Mohammadwadi, has formally lodged a complaint with the Pune Police Commissioner and Chief Secretary of Maharashtra State, highlighting the dire situation. Dhankikar’s letter states, “Despite numerous complaints, the Pune Municipal Corporation has neglected to address the issue of two overflowing drainages. The dirty water is flowing towards Raheja Vistas and Ganga Kingston, creating an unbearable stench and a perfect breeding ground for diseases like Zika and dengue, which are already on the rise in Pune.”

The health risks associated with these conditions are significant, with stagnant water known to be a breeding ground for mosquitoes that can carry dangerous diseases. Dhankikar’s letter demands immediate action, including the registration of an FIR against the PMC officials responsible for the negligence, immediate clearance of the blockages, and regular monitoring to prevent future occurrences.

“The health and well-being of citizens are at risk, and it is the responsibility of the authorities to ensure their safety,” Dhankikar added, urging prompt action to mitigate the health hazards.

The PMC’s failure to cover and maintain the drainage holes has turned them into a source of foul-smelling water, making the area nearly impassable and causing significant discomfort for residents and passersby.
