Pune: Medical Waste Openly Dumped In Garbage Vehicles In Alandi

Alandi, 18th May 2023: A shocking incident has come to light where medical waste is being openly dumped in the solid waste collection vehicle by the government rural hospital in Alandi. It is also seen that used injections are lying elsewhere on the hospital premises.

Hence, there is a possibility that the health of the cleaning staff of the municipality along with the citizens will is at risk.

It has come to light that various types of bio-medical waste like used injections, medicine bottles, needles, and cotton are being collected together in solid waste bins. Waste generated from medical treatment is hazardous to human and animal health. It can lead to various infectious diseases. It can be harmful if it falls into the hands of children.

Also, if animals and birds like chickens come in contact with the waste, and waste enters their stomachs, then the related animals, bird meat, and milk can also pose a threat to human health.

Kailas Kendre, Chief Officer, Alandi informed that according to the Bio-Medical Waste Management Rules, it is mandatory for the manufacturer to manage the waste generated in hospitals, health diagnostic centers, and medical, laboratories in the city. The waste should be sorted and sent to a treatment center approved by the Pollution Control Board. Biomedical waste should not be dumped in municipal solid waste vehicles.

“A notice has been issued to the Medical Superintendent, Rural Hospital, in the case of dumping a large amount of bio-medical waste in the garbage collection vehicle of the municipality through the Rural Hospital, Alandi. Punitive action will be taken if this kind of thing happens in the future through any government or private hospital,” he added further.
