Pune Mango Festival Witnesses Record Turnover Despite Earlier Mango Shortage
Pune, 5th July 2023: The allure of mangoes continues to captivate the hearts of Punekars. This year too, Punekars have flocked to the annual Mango Festival held in the city to experience the various types of mangoes in the market. According to the information, this year Punekars have purchased mangoes worth Rs 19 crore.
This year, due to climate change and seasonal fluctuations near the Konkan coast, the production of mangoes was reduced to a large extent. This further created shortages of mangoes in the market at the initial stage. But even in this shortage, consumers made large purchases at the Mango Festival of the Maharashtra State Agricultural Marketing Board held in the city.
This year, the mango festival was held in Pune from April 1 to June 3, 2023, at the Zilla Parishad premises in Market Yard. There were around 67 stalls at this festival from mango growers from Ratnagiri, Sindhudurg, Kolhapur, and Satara districts.
According to the information, a large number of people have purchased mangoes this year. Similarly, the export of the hapus mango has also increased significantly this year, with an estimate of approximately 942 tonnes of mangoes exported from the Vashi Export Facility Centre of the Marketing Board this year.
Mangesh Kadam, Assistant General Manager of Marketing Board and Controller of the Festival, informed that due to climate change this year, the price was increased from Rs 700 to Rs 1,200 at the beginning of the festival in the month of April. This rate hike continues throughout the month of April.
But as soon as mangoes started coming into the market from Ratnagiri and other districts, the prices gradually declined to 500 to 700 rupees per dozen. This price range continued after that until the end of the festival. Kadam further said that, this year, around two and a half to three lakh dozen mangoes were sold in the festival, with a remarkable turnover of approximately 19 crore rupees.
