Pune: A fraudulent scheme involving the promise of part-time jobs through WhatsApp and Telegram has resulted in duping amounting to Rs 16,50,894. The Vishrantwadi police station has registered a case in connection with this online extortion, which occurred between September 2 and September 6, 2023.

The complaint was filed by a 48-year-old resident of Dhanori. He reported that an unknown individual with a mobile and Telegram account contacted him, offering a part-time job. The perpetrators communicated through WhatsApp and Telegram, assigning various tasks for the purported job. Initially, he received a small payment upon completing the assigned tasks.

However, the situation took a dark turn when he was coerced into making payments if he wished to receive compensation. Subsequently, he was directed to transfer money to a different account, with the claim that the company had undergone a change. Falling victim to this ruse, he was deceived into transferring money to different accounts, with no possibility of receiving any refunds.
