Pune, 26th April 2023: The Pune Municipal Corporation (PMC) has secured the agreement of ten property owners in the University Chowk region to surrender their land for expanding and widening the square, and constructing a diversion, thereby accelerating the development of the double-decker flyover.

The area from the SSPU square up to Bizz Icon Society (Kakade Mall) will undergo significant road widening, which will ease the flow of traffic and facilitate one-way vehicular movement towards Shivajinagar.

The ten acquired sites for the widening of Ganesh Khind road include Mafatlal Bungalow (Amar Builders), Goyal Ganga, Jawahar Nagar co-op housing society, Shree Shree Ma Anandamayi Ashram, Cosmos Cooperative Bank, Ujjwal Mohite Bungalow, MH 37 Dhaba, Vijay Harijan Sah Gruh Sanstha, E-Square Mall, and Bizz Icon Society (Kakade Mall).

Following lengthy negotiations, the acquisition of the remaining eight sites, which extend from Kakade Mall up to the India Meteorological Department (IMD) signal, is expected to begin soon. The construction of the multi-level flyover, complete with a metro route, was authorized by the property owners after the prolonged land acquisition issue was resolved. The PMC will provide TDRs and FSI in exchange for the acquired land, thereby releasing them from the burden of providing cash compensation.

The widening of the road is of the utmost priority, as the junction is a crucial entry point for the western section of the city. The width of the carriage was significantly reduced due to the barricades erected for the metro pillar construction. Additional municipal commissioner Vikas Dhakane confirmed that the widening work would begin within eight days, stating that “The roads can now be widened.”

Furthermore, the PMC has planned a diversion beginning at the SSPU, through the Vaikunth Mehta National Institute of Cooperative Management (VAMNICON), and cutting through a road beside Kasturkunj housing society in the ICS colony in Bhosale Nagar. The road is ready, and only a patch connecting the diversion road needs to be acquired from a housing society. This diversion will bring tremendous relief to traffic coming from Aundh and heading towards Shivajinagar, as the opposite side route will receive more space for vehicular traffic movement.
