Pune, 23rd July 2024: Due to good rains in the catchment area of the Khadakwasla Dam chain, which supplies water to Pune, the dams have reached half their capacity. Regarding water supply, where there was once a threat of supply cuts, now it seems ‘Acche Din’ has arrived for Punekars. For the past three days, there has been constant rain in the area. Currently, all four dams have a combined water storage of 14.24 TMC. As decided in the District Planning Committee (DPC) meeting, water from the Khadakwasla Dam has started being supplied to the new Mutha Right Bank Canal for farming.

Pune receives its water supply from the Temghar, Varasgaon, Panshet, and Khadakwasla dams. Despite a consistent monsoon now, the rains underperformed in June. Since Sunday, the Temghar Dam area has received 70 mm of rain, the Varasgaon Dam area 50 mm, the Panshet Dam area 52 mm, and the Khadakwasla area 5 mm. Currently, all four dams collectively possess water totalling 15.24 TMC. The Temghar Dam has 1.48 TMC (39.94%), Varasgaon Dam 5.91 TMC (46.09%), Panshet Dam 6.31 TMC (59.28%), and Khadakwasla Dam 1.53 TMC (77.73%). Both Khadakwasla and Panshet have surpassed 50% of their water storage capacity, and the Water Resources Department of the Government of Maharashtra has clarified that Varasgaon may soon surpass the 50% storage capacity mark as well.

Additionally, the Pavana Dam, which supplies water to the Pimpri Chinchwad area, had 78 mm of rain. Currently, the dam possesses 3.87 TMC (45.45%) of its water storage capacity. Other dams in Pune have also been receiving good rains. Kalmodi Dam and Vadiwale Dam in Pune district have both reached full capacity at 100%. From Vadiwale Dam, 2,172 cusecs of water are being released into the Kundali River. The Water Resources Department has clarified that the release will be adjusted based on the rainfall received in the area.
