Kalyani Nagar, 12th October 2023: Residents of Kalyani Nagar are relieved as the long-standing issue of uncollected garden waste has finally been resolved. After enduring over two weeks of cluttered streets filled with tree branches and organic debris, the Pune Municipal Corporation (PMC) took action yesterday. However, residents continue to express concerns over PMC’s slow and inefficient waste management practices.

The accumulated garden waste had been a significant inconvenience for pedestrians and a health hazard. Piles of organic debris had become a common sight, posing risks to children and the elderly who had to navigate these obstacles.

The delay in waste collection created a breeding ground for mosquitoes, elevating the risk of vector-borne diseases like malaria, dengue, and chikungunya. Decaying plant material also released allergenic mold spores and airborne particles, exacerbating respiratory conditions such as asthma and allergies.

Improper waste disposal attracted vermin, carrying pathogens that could lead to gastrointestinal and skin infections. The presence of garden waste also raised concerns about zoonotic diseases.

Jaffar Iqbal, Trustee of Team Swatch Kalyani Nagar, said, “The waste was finally picked up yesterday after multiple complaints. PMC officers have a slow work process, but we hope for quicker action in the future.”

Natasha Sehgal, an activist from Team Swatch Kalyani Nagar, added, “I’ve repeatedly asked the PMC to clean up the area. While Raheja Woods Society was cleared yesterday, several other areas still need attention.”

Avinash More, area supervisor, explained, “We had extra workload due to Ganesh Utsav, affecting the availability of trucks. I’ve escalated this issue to PMC, and regular cleanups will resume.”

While residents are relieved to see the main road cleared, they remain dissatisfied with PMC’s inconsistent cleaning of by-lanes. They call for a more efficient waste management system to prevent future issues.

The recent waste collection offers a glimmer of hope but also serves as a reminder of the need for a proactive and responsive PMC. Residents anticipate lasting improvements in waste management and a cleaner environment in their community.
