The jointly-initiated campaign, named ‘Majhe Pune, Swachh Pune,’ aims to revolutionize waste disposal practices, enhance cleanliness, and improve sanitation in the area.

The campaign’s official launch event was held on May 17, 2023, at Kesari Wada in Narayan Peth, Pune. The esteemed guest of honor was the Honorable Guardian Minister of Pune, Chandrakant Dada Patil . Dignitaries such as Vikram Kumar, Pune Municipal Commissioner, Kunal Khemnar, Additional Commissioner, and Asha Raut, Deputy Commissioner of the Solid Waste Management Department, graced the occasion. Representatives from PPCR, including Dr. Sudhir Mehta, Ashish Bhandari, Rajeev Kher, Indraneel Chitale, Manoj Pochat, and Ravi Pandit, as well as Mahesh Suryawanshi from Dagdusheth Trust and Pune’s Swachh Bharat Mission ambassadors, Dr. Saleel Kulkarni and Rutuja Bhosle, were also present.

The campaign, set to run for 12 months and executed by Social Labs and Janwani, aims to achieve three major objectives: attaining 100% waste collection, segregating 80% of waste at the source, and eliminating all chronic garbage spots or vulnerable areas within the targeted region. Prior to implementation, a primary survey was conducted involving 85 waste pickers and 7,575 citizens to determine the appropriate course of action. It is anticipated that the campaign will positively impact more than 280,000 individuals, including around 85,000 households, 23,000 commercial establishments, and 12,000 slums. Additionally, the project aims to eliminate approximately 240 chronic garbage spots.

Ashish Bhandari, Co-lead of PPCR, expressed his enthusiasm for the campaign, stating, “This groundbreaking initiative showcases the collective efforts of various corporations, NGOs, voluntary groups, and local urban bodies in raising mass awareness among citizens. We are committed to contributing to the well-being of the environment through sustainable waste management practices. It is a matter of great pride for us to partner with PMC, as it aligns perfectly with our vision for a cleaner future. We are confident that this campaign will serve as a benchmark for other wards in Pune to emulate.”

Vikram Kumar from PMC shared his excitement, saying, “We are thrilled to initiate this pilot project in Kasba-Vishrambauag Wada, which will subsequently be implemented throughout the city, ensuring 100% coverage and segregation. This endeavor will enable PMC to eliminate areas vulnerable to garbage accumulation, optimize waste processing, and enhance waste recycling, fostering a circular economy.”

Through the collaborative efforts of PMC and PPCR, this ambitious waste management campaign aims to make a significant and lasting impact, not only in Kasba – Vishrambaugwada but also as a model for similar initiatives across Pune.
