Pune, 28th April 2023: The Centre for Development of Advanced Computing (C-DAC) has developed a ‘Reverse Time Migration’ (RTM) system for locating underground oil and gas reserves.

It has been claimed that the system developed by C-DAC will be cost-effective as compared to the currently used foreign system, it will be possible for the oil and gas companies to find the reserves by analyzing the deposits through this system.

Director General of C-DAC E Magesh gave this information in a press conference. Richa Rastogi, Joint Director of, the Seismic Modeling Department, which developed the system, and Suhas Phadke, Consultant, were present on the occasion.

Companies conduct seismic surveys on land or at sea to find oil and gas deposits, which are vital for power generation and transportation. After that, the location for hydrocarbon drilling is determined by analyzing the obtained data. A foreign-made system is currently used for this process and crores of rupees have to be spent for the said process.

As a solution to this, C-DAC has developed an indigenously fabricated system under the ‘National Super Computing Mission’. Support from ONGC and IIT, Roorkee has been received for this. Magesh said that this system will provide services to the oil companies at a lower cost compared to the current costs.

Rastogi said that work has been going on for the past four years to develop the RTM system. The system was tested using the leave provided by ONGC, and the validity was checked. “The system will generally be opened next year. Currently, available foreign systems do not have the facility to make changes as per requirement, whereas in RTM system it is possible to make changes, and updates as per requirement,” she added further.

C-DAC has organized a workshop on HPC in Seismic Imaging: Seeing Below the Earth’s Surface on Friday (28th April). Seismic imaging will be discussed in this workshop. Experts from the oil industry, research institutes, and educational institutes are participating in this workshop.
