Pune, 19th August 2024: Pune experienced a heavy downpour on Sunday evening, causing widespread disruptions across the city. According to the latest data, Lonavala recorded the highest rainfall with 115.5 mm, followed by WadgaonSheri with 113.5 mm. Other areas also saw substantial rainfall, contributing to significant challenges for commuters and residents.

The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has issued a warning for continued moderate rainfall over the next three to four days. The IMD’s forecast includes “generally cloudy skies and a few spells of moderate rain.”

The intense rainfall led to severe traffic congestion, with waterlogged roads reported in Yerwada, Balewadi, Hadapsar, Kothrud, Peth, and the Ramwadi underpass. Solapur Road was particularly affected, with approximately 50 vehicles blocking a narrow lane, exacerbating the traffic situation. Commuters criticized the Pune Municipal Corporation (PMC) for inadequate planning and the traffic police for ineffective management.

Flooding was observed in several areas including Pashan, Balewadi, and Baner. Water from an overflowing drain entered the Konark Nagar housing society in Vimannagar. The PMC’s disaster management department reported 35 complaints of waterlogging from areas along Solapur and Satara roads. Additionally, there were incidents of a treefall and a short circuit at Dyaneshwar Paduka Chowk on FC Road.

On a positive note, the catchment areas of Pune’s four major dams—Khadakwasla, Varasgaon, Temghar, and Panshet—received moderate rainfall, raising the collective storage to 97.27%, with 28.35 TMC (thousand million cubic feet) of water as of Monday morning.
