Kothrud, 7th December 2022: 45 societies have banded together to voice their worries about MIT World Peace University college students who dangerously drive, park automobiles carelessly, celebrate birthdays late at night, and are also allegedly participating in intoxicated parties in Kothrud.

To find a solution to the annoyance they are experiencing, 9,000 citizens from the societies that make up the group “Citizens Forum at 11” got together for a conversation. On 30th November, the gathering took place in the Girija Society auditorium.

Sandeep Bhadkamkar, the coordinator of the forum, explained that the residents of these societies are met with problems regularly due to students parking their vehicles in front of their bungalows and building gates. Bhadkamkar also pointed out students often have late-night parties and create issues in a drunken state. “We have to put up with their obscene behaviour on the streets,” he said.

Bhadkamkar added that multiple food sellers, including hotels and street vendors, have shown up on the streets. It has led to encroachment problems, adding to the struggle of the residents.

“We met the MIT-WPU management, including the registrar, and urged them to come up with short-term and long-term solutions for resolving these civic issues,” he explained.

The forum has created a structured plan to curb the issue –

1. On a working day during the busiest morning hours, form a human chain along MIT College Road and Bedekar Ganapati [BG] Road to protest against all MIT Institutions and their student-related issues.

2. Take action against all the vehicles that are carelessly parked on either or both of these routes on a certain day to make the vehicle owners aware of the issue.

3. On the 9th or 12th of December, a meeting with PMC and Police officials to consider immediate and long-term actions.

4. Distribute the phone numbers for all relevant departments (such as PMC, Beat Marshals, and police stations) so that the public can frequently register complaints for action.

5. To compare the ownership of MIT-built lands and infrastructure between 1987 and 2022.
