Pune: High-Speed Dumper Hits Scooter; One Dead, Driver in Custody

Yerwada, 5th September 2024: An accident occurred on Thursday morning at Golf Chowk in Yerwada, resulting in the death of a two-wheeler driver. Deepak Keshav Bhatevara, a 40-year-old resident of Lohgaon, Pune, died instantly when a dumper collided with his Activa scooter.

The accident took place around 7:30 a.m. when the dumper was traveling at high speed from Loop Road towards Pune-Ahmednagar Road. The vehicle struck Bhatevara’s scooter, causing him to come under the wheels of the dumper. The impact was fatal, and Bhatevara was pronounced dead at the spot.

The driver of the dumper, Bhima Tukaram Kattamani, 31, a resident of Wagholi, Pune, has been taken into custody by the Yerawada police.

Residents and local authorities have expressed growing concerns over reckless driving by heavy vehicles, which often flout road safety rules. The incident has highlighted ongoing issues with traffic management and the untimely departure of private passenger buses, contributing to frequent road accidents and severe traffic congestion.

Citizens are calling for stricter enforcement of traffic regulations for heavy vehicles and improved scheduling for luxury travel buses to prevent such tragic accidents. They urge the police and local administration to implement permanent measures to address these pressing safety issues.
