Pune, 16th December 2022: The High Court gave the Pune Zilla Parishad and the Pune and Pimpri-Chinchwad Municipal Corporations (PMC/PCMC) clear instructions to face punitive action if they fail to provide citizens with sufficient water.

A petition regarding the supply of water had been filed directly with the High Court by the societies of Baner, Balewadi, Wagholi, Undri, Pisoli, Fursungi, and other Pune Municipal Corporation suburbs. The population consists of more than two and a half to three lakh people from each of these areas. Their urbanisation has resulted from societies in which these citizens rely on tankers for water. Despite the demand, the municipality is not prepared to address its needs. This is why numerous societies and the High Court had requested it. Pimpri-Chinchwad is a suburb within municipal limits and under Zilla Parishad jurisdiction in some villages. There has also been urbanisation, which has made it necessary for people to live in societies and wait for tankers to bring drinking water. Due to this, the kingdom of the tanker mafia has flourished in all these areas. Additionally, they sent a petition to the High Court. A month ago, the High Court held a hearing on this matter. The court had mandated that the affidavit be submitted by 13th December.

The order was ignored by all three local bodies. During the hearing that took place on Thursday, their lawyer was not present in the court. However, the counsel for the petitioners was present. The fact that the local bodies had not submitted the affidavit until 13th December was pointed out to the court, and the court took this very seriously. The petition will be heard again on 9th January. In 2016, a petition was submitted to the High Court regarding the lack of potable water in Baner Balewadi. At that point, new construction within the Pune Municipal Corporation’s boundaries had been suspended by the court. Additionally, it was mandated that a water problem committee be established to resolve the issue.

Additionally, the petition has demanded that the construction should be suspended again because this committee has not been formed.
