Vishrantwadi, 27th June 2023: The indiscriminate throwing of garbage into a polluted nala (drain) and the disposal of concrete rubble from a bridge have raised concerns about environmental pollution in the area. Located near Mhaske vasti on Alandi Road, the natural rainwater drain is constantly filled with polluted sewer water, creating a breeding ground for mosquitoes and microbes, emitting a foul stench.

The deterioration of the chamber between the drain pipe and sewer line has caused the open discharge of polluted water, affecting a 1.5 km stretch of the nala. In May, the Pune Municipal Corporation (PMC) initiated an extensive cleaning and widening mission for the nala. However, the situation remains dire due to the continuous flowing polluted sewer water.

The bridge situated on the eastern side of the nala has four underpasses, but only two of them are currently functional. The other two underpasses have become blocked as a result of the indiscriminate disposal of concrete rubble. On the western culvert side, local residents have been using it as a dumping ground for garbage, further obstructing the flow of the stream. During the monsoon season, the bridge frequently gets submerged, causing traffic disruptions that can last for hours.

To address these issues, it is crucial to repair the sewer leak by restoring the damaged chamber. Additionally, high-rising link wire mesh frames should be installed on both culverts to prevent further garbage disposal and blockages.

The local authorities and civic bodies must take immediate action to resolve this environmental threat. Ensuring the proper functioning of the nala and implementing measures to prevent pollution and blockages will be vital for the well-being of the community and the preservation of the local ecosystem.

Residents and environmental activists are urging the PMC to prioritize the restoration of the nala and the implementation of effective waste management strategies to safeguard the environment and ensure the smooth flow of water during the upcoming monsoon season.
